Before most surgical procedures are started our practice advises blood work for patients under-going sedation/anesthesia. The level of blood work is based on the patient’s age and medical history. We use this to determine if it is safe to proceed with the planned procedure.We also recommend an intravenous catheter and fluids for anesthesia. Fluids help maintain blood pressure and keep your pet hydrated, this will also help improve their recovery after the procedure. In the event of even the slightest anesthetic complication an intravenous line is already in place for us to administer life saving medications quickly. 

Only a few surgeries are scheduled each day to give each pet personalized medical attention. Some spay and neuter clinics take the opposite approach. They schedule a large volume of surgeries each day, making it difficult to provide personalized medical attention for your pet. 

While under anesthesia, we use monitors to measure heart rate, respiration (breathing), blood pressure and blood oxygen levels. They have preset alarms to alert us the moment any minor problem arises. All your pet’s vital statistics are monitored and recorded allowing the doctor and technician to monitor trends and respond appropriately to ensure the safety of your pet. 

After surgery your pet enters the recovery stage where we have an assigned technician monitoring your pet until it is completely “awake”. We feel surgery should not be performed like an assembly line and take time to individually monitor your pet until they are safe and comfortable. 

All pets are administered pain control before and during surgery. After surgery, all patients’ comfort level is assessed multiple times and they are sent home with appropriate pain medication.
